How Much Is a Taxi from Munich Airport to the City Centre?

Visitors planning a trip to Munich often search for one number: the taxi price from Munich Airport to the city centre. In reality, one universal figure would be misleading because central Munich contains many different neighbourhoods and addresses.

A taxi to München Hauptbahnhof is treated differently from a ride to Schwabing, Haidhausen, Marienplatz or the Theresienwiese area. To understand the cost, it helps to know the current taxi rules and the special airport-to-main-station fixed fare.

Fixed fare from Munich Airport to Hauptbahnhof

For one particularly common journey, the price is clear.

Since 1 July 2026, the official Munich taxi tariff provides a fixed route fare of €96 between Munich Airport and the defined Hauptbahnhof zone.

The fixed fare applies to the specified route between the defined zones. Surcharges permitted by the official tariff may still be relevant in particular circumstances.

This is useful because older travel pages and forum posts can still show previous prices. Always check the date of the information you are reading.

Why not every city-centre trip costs €96

The Hauptbahnhof zone is specifically defined.

A hotel near Marienplatz, the English Garden, Schwabing or another district is not automatically covered by the same airport-to-Hauptbahnhof fixed amount.

For taxi journeys that do not use this special route fare, the current Munich tariff applies. Since July 2026, the tariff includes a starting charge and distance-based kilometre rates, as well as waiting-time provisions.

That means traffic can influence the final metered price when no permitted fixed fare has been agreed.

Pre-booked taxi and price certainty

Munich taxi rules allow fixed-price arrangements for certain pre-booked journeys within the permitted tariff framework.

If price certainty is important, clarify the total before travelling.

A private transfer also works with a price displayed before booking. On airporttransfer-muenchen.com, the amount shown for the selected partner offer is not the official Munich taxi tariff. It is the booking price for that particular private transfer service.

The two systems should not be confused.

What determines the cost of a private transfer?

Distance is one factor, but not the only one.

Vehicle size, date, passenger count, child seats and other additional services can influence the available offer.

A larger minivan or minibus will not necessarily cost the same as a sedan.

The relevant figure is the total shown in the booking flow after you enter the actual route and requirements.

Is a taxi cheaper for several people?

Vehicle transport is priced differently from a public transport ticket.

If several people share one taxi or transfer vehicle, the total vehicle price is divided across the group.

For a solo traveller, the S-Bahn will usually be much cheaper. For a family or group, the gap per person becomes smaller.

However, a larger group may need a larger vehicle, so passenger count and luggage must be considered together.

Luggage matters

Three passengers with cabin bags are different from three passengers with three large suitcases and a stroller.

A standard taxi may have enough seats but not enough boot space for every bag.

If you know the group has significant luggage, a pre-booked minivan can be easier because the luggage quantity is declared in advance.

Do not assume “four passengers” automatically means “four large suitcases fit”.

Taxi versus S-Bahn

The S-Bahn is usually the lowest-cost option for a solo traveller or couple with light luggage.

Both S1 and S8 connect MUC with central Munich, and the airport gives a journey time of roughly 40 minutes to Hauptbahnhof.

But compare the whole trip. If your hotel is not near the station and you need another U-Bahn, tram or taxi, add that final stage.

A taxi or private transfer goes directly to the address, which can be valuable after a long flight.

Avoid outdated fare information

Taxi tariffs change.

A blog post from 2024 or 2025 may quote a price that no longer applies in 2026.

The same is true for private transfer websites. An “from” price is a starting point, not a guarantee for every address, time and vehicle.

Use the actual booking quote for your journey.

How to compare fairly

Compare the same start and end points.

“Airport to Hauptbahnhof by train” is not the same service as “airport to a hotel door in Schwabing”.

Include passengers, luggage, child seats and time of arrival.

If you are booking an airport pickup, also check how reported flight delays and waiting time are handled.
