S1 or S8 from Munich Airport: Which S-Bahn Should You Take?

After landing at Munich Airport, many visitors see two lines on the signs: S1 and S8. Both travel from the airport into Munich, but they take different routes. That means the right choice depends on your actual destination rather than on a simple rule that one line is always better.

For passengers going to München Hauptbahnhof, either line can work under normal conditions. For hotels in other parts of the city, one route may save an extra change.

Both lines connect the airport and central Munich

Munich Airport is served by both S1 and S8. According to the airport, the journey to the main station takes about 40 minutes.

During the day, the lines are scheduled to provide a frequent combined connection between the airport and central Munich.

The S1 approaches Munich from the western side and serves Moosach. The S8 approaches from the east and serves Ostbahnhof.

If Hauptbahnhof is your destination, you can normally take either. If you want to get off earlier or connect to another part of the city, compare the routes.

When S8 is useful

S8 is particularly convenient for destinations on the eastern side of Munich or for travellers who can connect efficiently at Ostbahnhof.

Hotels in Haidhausen and other eastern districts may be easier to reach without travelling all the way through to Hauptbahnhof first.

S8 is also important for very late and very early travel. Munich Airport publishes overnight operation information for the line, with longer intervals during the deepest night hours. Because schedules and construction work can change, always check live information before travelling.

When S1 is useful

S1 approaches from the west and passes Moosach.

If your accommodation or onward connection is in western Munich, the S1 may offer the more direct route.

Its regular operating hours differ from the S8, especially on weekday nights. Weekend and holiday operations can also vary from normal weekday schedules.

Again, use current journey planning rather than an old screenshot or travel-blog timetable.

Do not automatically board the first train

After a long flight, it is tempting to take whichever train arrives first.

If your hotel is close to Hauptbahnhof, that may be perfectly reasonable. If it is in another district, the wrong route can create a longer final connection.

Before boarding, enter the complete hotel address into a route planner. That tells you whether it is better to use S1, S8, Ostbahnhof, Moosach or another interchange.

Luggage can change the best route

With one small suitcase, an additional change is not a serious problem.

With two large suitcases, a stroller and hand luggage, a theoretical five-minute saving is less important than avoiding a difficult platform change.

Families and older travellers should compare convenience as well as travel time.

If your hotel is far from any direct S-Bahn station, a taxi or private transfer can become more attractive because the journey continues directly to the door.

What happens at night?

Late-night arrivals need more planning.

The S8 is particularly useful because it has overnight service, although the intervals can be significantly longer in the early-morning hours.

The S1 has different regular operating hours.

Even if one airport line is running, the local U-Bahn, tram or bus needed for the final section of your journey may have a reduced night schedule.

Always check the complete route to the accommodation.

S-Bahn or direct airport transfer?

The S-Bahn is excellent when your hotel is conveniently located, you travel light and you are comfortable using public transport.

A pre-booked transfer offers a different benefit: direct door-to-door travel.

On airporttransfer-muenchen.com, you can enter the actual destination, passenger count and luggage before travelling. For airport pickups, the flight number can be included and the meeting point is given in the booking confirmation.

Families can also check available infant-carrier, child-seat or booster options.

How to decide quickly

Look at the exact address, not just “Munich”.

If the route planner shows an easy S8 journey, use S8. If S1 gives a better connection, use S1.

If both routes require several changes and you have substantial luggage, compare the total effort with a direct car journey.

For Hauptbahnhof, simply use the next appropriate S1 or S8 under normal service conditions.

Returning to the airport

For your departure, check the line again rather than assuming the arrival route is still the best.

Construction work can temporarily change services, and the nearest station to your hotel may have a better connection at a different time of day.

Leave enough margin for airport check-in and security.
