After landing at Munich Airport (MUC), most visitors have the same first question: what is the easiest way to reach central Munich? The good news is that the airport is well connected by rail, bus, taxi and private transfer. The best option depends on your exact destination, how much luggage you have, how many people are travelling and what time your flight arrives.
Munich does not have one single “city centre” stop that works equally well for every visitor. A hotel near Marienplatz, Schwabing, Haidhausen, the main station or the Theresienwiese can require very different onward connections. That is why it makes sense to compare the entire journey from baggage reclaim to the hotel door, not just the first train segment.
S-Bahn from Munich Airport
The S-Bahn is the most common public transport option. Both S1 and S8 connect Munich Airport with the city. Munich Airport states that the journey to München Hauptbahnhof, the main central station, takes about 40 minutes.
The two lines take different routes. The S1 approaches the centre from the west and serves areas including Moosach. The S8 approaches from the east and serves Ostbahnhof. If your hotel is located near the eastern side of the city, the S8 can be more convenient. For destinations in western Munich, the S1 may be more practical.
For travellers with one suitcase, the S-Bahn is usually straightforward. The situation is different if you are travelling with several large suitcases, a stroller, ski equipment or young children. In that case, the most tiring part may begin after you reach the main station or another interchange and still have to take the U-Bahn, tram or bus to your final address.
Bus, taxi or private airport transfer?
Bus services also connect the airport with Munich. They can be convenient when the stop is close to your accommodation. The correct comparison is the complete door-to-door journey rather than the scheduled airport-to-city time alone.
A taxi gives you a direct ride. For the route between Munich Airport and the defined Hauptbahnhof zone, an official fixed taxi fare of €96 has applied since July 2026. Other destinations in Munich are not automatically covered by the same amount. Depending on the route and the booking arrangement, different tariff rules or a permitted pre-agreed fixed fare may apply.
A pre-booked private airport transfer works differently. You provide your destination, travel date, passenger count and luggage before the trip. On airporttransfer-muenchen.com, the price of the available partner offer is shown before the booking is completed. For an airport pickup, enter the correct flight number so that reported delays can be taken into account according to the booking conditions. The meeting point is provided in the confirmation.
Which option works best for different travellers?
For a solo traveller with little luggage, the S-Bahn is often an excellent choice. It is frequent, clear and does not require pre-booking.
For a family with small children, comfort can matter more. A direct vehicle means the stroller and suitcases are loaded once at the airport and unloaded at the accommodation. Families can also check whether an infant carrier, child seat or booster is available in the transfer booking.
Groups should look at more than the price of one vehicle. Five, six or seven people may fit into a minivan, but the luggage must fit as well. Larger groups or travellers with significant luggage may need a minibus. A vehicle with enough seats does not automatically have enough boot capacity for the same number of full-size suitcases.
How much time should you allow after landing?
The scheduled landing time is not the time when you stand outside the terminal.
After touchdown, the aircraft taxis to the stand, passengers disembark, passport control may be required and checked luggage has to arrive at the carousel. On international flights, the time between landing and exiting the terminal can vary significantly.
This is one reason a pre-booked airport pickup should include the correct flight number. It also explains why travellers should follow the meeting instructions for their particular booking instead of assuming that a driver waits at the terminal doors immediately at touchdown.
If you are taking the S-Bahn, you also need time to walk from arrivals to the station. Munich Airport has two S-Bahn stations. The station relevant to terminal passengers is “Flughafen München”; “Besucherpark” mainly serves other airport areas.
“City centre” is not the same as “Hauptbahnhof”
One of the most common planning mistakes is to use Munich Hauptbahnhof as if it were every visitor’s final destination.
Your hotel might be near Marienplatz, the English Garden, Schwabing, Haidhausen, Lehel or the Theresienwiese. If you arrive at Hauptbahnhof by S-Bahn and then need another underground train or taxi, that extra time belongs in your comparison.
The same rule applies when travelling back to the airport. Do not calculate only the ideal driving time. Rush hour, roadworks, large events and winter conditions can require a buffer.
When a direct ride makes sense
Public transport is strong for light, flexible travel. A direct transfer becomes more attractive when the address is not close to a station, when you are tired after a long-haul flight, when children are travelling with you or when the group has several bags.
The best choice is the one that matches the real journey, not the one that looks fastest on one isolated timetable.
